Porcelain, sandstone, slate or resin: choosing a surface

The paving and driveway materials Hertford & Welwyn Garden City Landscapes is asked for, and what each one is doing on a real job.

Paving and planting in a finished Hertfordshire garden.

The practice names the materials on the current site because clients ask for them by name: porcelain, Indian sandstone, granite, slate and York stone for patios, and resin as well as block and tarmac for drives. Stone is bought from local and specialist suppliers, including companies who can say the stone was sourced with some care.

What the published jobs actually used

The portfolio is more specific than a catalogue.

  • Sandstone slabs, a compacted hardcore base and a block edge on Mr Gorden’s Borehamwood drive
  • Block paving and stone-and-timber walling on the steep Kharne entrance in Radlett
  • A renewed tarmac surface for the Kemptons in Hemel Hempstead
  • Sandstone again on John Mason’s St Albans patio, with block paving as the lawn edge

The right surface is the slope, the levels and what you want underfoot in January. A resin drive and a York stone terrace are both on the list. They are not interchangeable. Say how the space is used, and whether water already sits against the house, before the sample is chosen.
